No.1 Emotional Inteligence Versus Cognative Inteligence



Most people’s idea of intelligence is all based on knowledge and cognitive intelligence such as being able to plan, solve problem and learn a piece of information very quickly, although for me that is not my opinion, I agree with man called Wechsler who believes that general intelligence is based around two key components;

  • Cognitive Intelligence(IQ)
  • Emotional and social Intelligence(EI)

Cognitive Intelligence to me sounds sometimes unrealistic and robot like. According to Kaplan and Sadock, Their theory of Cognitive Intelligence is;
   
"The ability to learn new things, recall information,
think rationally, apply knowledge and solve problems."
(Kaplan & Sadock, 1991)

Emotional intelligence is a lot broader; it is the ability to understand and express oneself and in a group of people be able to communicate and in every day issues and problems be able to deal with them and resolve them in a suitable manner. According to Bar-on his theory is that;
                                                                    
                                               “To effectively understand and express
                                            ourselves, to understand and relate well with
                                              others, and to successfully cope with daily
                                                    demands, challenges and pressures”.                           
                                                                      (Bar-On,2007)


The bar-on model is just one of the 3 major models of emotional intelligence. This determines the intelligent behavior of a person; they will have one or more of the 5 components.

1. Intrapersonal Skills
2. Interpersonal Skills
3. Adaptability
4. Stress Management
5. General Mood

What distinguishes the best leaders from the majority is their level of emotional intelligence. (Fletcher, 2012)
For me, I believe to have Emotional intelligence is of much more benefit to you in life than cognitive intelligence. It may be debatable as for majority of jobs these days solely depend on cognitive ability rather than any other aspects of that person, but if we were to interview a person depending solely on their Emotional Intelligence I believe that people with a higher EI would have the position.

  •    A person whom has a higher EI is more inclined to have a positive interaction with their family and peers, to have life satisfaction and to have healthy psychological adaptions.
  •    Where as a person with a lower EI has more violent behavior and is seen to have illegal use of drugs.
