No.1 Emotional Inteligence Versus Cognative Inteligence

Most people’s idea of intelligence is all based on knowledge and cognitive intelligence such as being able to plan, solve problem and learn a piece of information very quickly, although for me that is not my opinion, I agree with man called Wechsler who believes that general intelligence is based around two key components;

  • Cognitive Intelligence(IQ)
  • Emotional and social Intelligence(EI)

Cognitive Intelligence to me sounds sometimes unrealistic and robot like. According to Kaplan and Sadock, Their theory of Cognitive Intelligence is;

"The ability to learn new things, recall information,
think rationally, apply knowledge and solve problems."
(Kaplan & Sadock, 1991)

Emotional intelligence is a lot broader; it is the ability to understand and express oneself and in a group of people be able to communicate and in every day issues and problems be able to deal with them and resolve them in a suitable manner. According to Bar-on his theory is that;

                                               “To effectively understand and express
                                            ourselves, to understand and relate well with
                                              others, and to successfully cope with daily
                                                    demands, challenges and pressures”.
                                                                      (Bar-On,2007)

The bar-on model is just one of the 3 major models of emotional intelligence. This determines the intelligent behavior of a person; they will have one or more of the 5 components.

1. Intrapersonal Skills
2. Interpersonal Skills
3. Adaptability
4. Stress Management
5. General Mood

What distinguishes the best leaders from the majority is their level of emotional intelligence. (Fletcher, 2012)
For me, I believe to have Emotional intelligence is of much more benefit to you in life than cognitive intelligence. It may be debatable as for majority of jobs these days solely depend on cognitive ability rather than any other aspects of that person, but if we were to interview a person depending solely on their Emotional Intelligence I believe that people with a higher EI would have the position.

  •    A person whom has a higher EI is more inclined to have a positive interaction with their family and peers, to have life satisfaction and to have healthy psychological adaptions.
  •    Where as a person with a lower EI has more violent behavior and is seen to have illegal use of drugs.

No.6 Effective Note Taking

I think we can all say that taking notes during a tutorial is somewhat impossible when you lecturer is flying through the slides, while you’re trying to take down what you can and by the end you probably have no clue what that whole lecture consisted of. Well now I myself have found a solution to our problem:
There are many ways to take notes effectively and quickly, some may suit others better.
There are five tips to prep you for note taking on Jerz’sliteracy weblog.

   The two that I have been found useful are:
  • Cornell Method
  • Mind Mapping

       These methods will help you to:
  •  Stay focused in class
  • Allows you to have a record of what you have learned from that class
  • Have a basis for further learning and research

I am going to do an example of the Cornell Method technique; I am taking notes on a video clip of a young girl called Adore Svitak. She is explaining to a audience full of adults how ‘adults can learn from children’.

Follow yourself on YouTube: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/adora_svitak.html

I used the Cornell Method as there was a lot of information given very fast in this video clip and this method allowed me to write the key information on one side and on the other to elaborate on those ideas. This system allows you to keep your notes organized, summarize the main points of the lecture quickly, and review for tests more efficiently. (Ruschhaupt, 2010)

If the Cornell Method isn’t for you, why not try out the Mind Mapping Technique.

No. 5 Plagiarism and Referencing

If you have never heard of these two words before, don’t panic it is very normal. I have recently only come across these words myself, and for most, it is in the first week of starting college which I won’t lie was terrifying.

After getting over the first week it all seemed to sink in and these two words ‘Plagiarism and referencing’ sounded normal. I will now answer some of the most frequently asked questions about plagiarism and referencing that I too asked and hope you have a better understanding.

What does it mean?

Firstly Plagiarism in simple words is stealing the ideas or words from another person and using those as your own. This could be for instance; coping a video, image or music. If you wish to use an image or quote from another person, you then must Reference that information which in other words is showing where you got your source of information or ideas from using a bibliography.

When do I use it?

When you are researching your topic you will come across books, websites, pictures, quotes which are all owned by someone else and is not your writing so therefore you must put a referencing bibliography at the end of each essay or piece where you have used another person’s word.

How do I reference correctly?

When we learnt about referencing we were given many guidelines on how to reference; books, websites, articles using Harvard style referencing but as my sister has just finished college she had gone through all the stresses of referencing until she came about a website called ‘Neil’s tool box’ which is a referencing site which orders your reference Harvard style. Trust me I highly recommend it for any new student going into to the college world it will save a lot of time and stress which is not needed. Here’s an example of a Harvard style reference from this site;
Book= lifelines 2nd edition

Reference= Enright,C and Flynn,M (2010). Lifelines. 2nd ed. Dublin: Folens publishers. p24.

Happy Referencing!
